If things keep pace, this summer (2012) is on pace to finish as the third hottest summer in US history on the list of 62 summers on record since 1950.

According to Steven A. Root, who is a certified consulting meteorologist and president and CEO of WeatherBank, Inc., 2012 is still in the running for the number two spot and perhaps number one. Root has been examining hourly and daily temperatures in 59 hub cities since Jan. 1, 1950.

Based on Root’s records, the hottest summer ever recorded was last year in 2011 with 60,402 CDDs. The second hottest summer was 1951 with 60,078 CDDs according to Root. Comparatively, the coolest summer was 1965 with 43,337 CDDs, but we’re far from that.
