Air Conditioning Your Parking Lot: Heat-Reflecting Paint Cooling Down the Asphalt

Walking through a steaming hot parking lot in the middle of summer is never fun; but now, you might not have to! Parking lots can now be kept substantially cooler with light-colored, heat-reflecting asphalt and paint. How much cooler, you ask? 40 degrees!

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Northern California recently used their parking lot to demonstrate this. They have used several different types of commercially available, heat-reflective paint to see how well each paint works, and for how long. Generally, heat-reflecting surfaces keep cities at a much more comfortable temperature, aid residents in cutting back on the electricity they use for their air conditioning, and keep cities cleaner by slowing down the formation of smog.

What energy-saving uses can you think of for reflective paint? Leave us a comment below! Don’t forget to contact Windy City Air for all your Las Vegas AC repair and furnace needs.
